Two engr. frontispieces, 2 large engr. vignettes, 16 large folding engr. plates with historical allegories by Romeyn de Hooghe (ca. 16 x 27 cm), woodcut head- and tailpieces & initials (12), 480, 55, 143, 44, (4); (18), 335, 339, (8) pp.

Fine set of this important work on the history and political constitution of the Dutch Republic illustrated by Romeyn de Hooghe (1645 - 1708), the most significant and prolific Dutch engraver in the second half of the seventeenth century. De Hooghe describes the seven Dutch provinces with their most important cities and the structure of constitution and governement. The second volume, titled: Spiegel van Staat. Vervattende de Macht der Generaliteyt..,  deals with the higher courts of law and the Dutch VOC and WIC, the trade on the Levant and te herring fishery. This overview of the Dutch constitution was meant for a broad public.
