Esopus in Europe
[HOOGHE, Romeyn de].De Tyger voor Themis vierschaar. ![]() ![]() ![]() Volgens de Romeinse Copy. (Amst., Sebastiaan Petzold), 1701. 4to. Modern half blue cloth, with inside wrappers. With large engraving on title, showing Themis, or 'Lady Justice', sitting blind-folded and holding scales next to the 'Dutch Lion' in judgment over the 'French Tiger', with an Eagle as prosecutor. 8 pp. First edition of one of the separately published political fables, published under the pseudonym of "Esopus" by Romeyn de Hooghe (1645-1708), famous Dutch artist and book illustrator. Published in 1701-1702 the fables sharply comment upon the political situation in Europe just before and after the death of Charles II of Spain. Each fable was illustrated with a large engraving on the title-page, and after they reached a total of 40, they were published collected, under the title "Esopus in Europa" (Aesop in Europe), and later also republished at the Hague in 1738-1739, both separately and collected. As depicted on the engraved plate, in the present fable the "Tiger", that is Louis XIV of France, is brought before the court of Themis (Justice), but the Dutch "Lion" gives the final verdict. Although the present pamphlet is exemplary for the genre, described in "Fabula Docet" as "Fabelbild auf politischem Flugblatt", no De Hooghe fables were present at the exhibition or listed in the catalogue "Fabula Docet". Fine copy, with the bookplate of F. Eickhoff.
