Nice, popular play, first published in 1628. Our edition is an unrecorded variant of the third edition: NCC (only 2 copies), Van Aken and Scheepers all list a third enlarged edition printed by Van Ravesteyn for Hout-Haeck published in 1645! The author (1594-1658) was an Amsterdam 'Glaasschrijver' (glass-engraver) and well respected in the Amsterdam literary circles. He was a member of the board of the Oude Kamer and of the Schouwburgh. In his Klucht van Styve Piet he describes the elopement of Aeltje Lammers by Styve Piet, followed by their marriage. This marriage is only approved by Aeltje's enraged parents Lammert and Sybrich Jans, after the intercession of a neighbour, Jannetje Floris.
The device on the titlepage "Door yver in liefde bloeiende" was the motto of the Amsterdam Schouwburgh. It dates from the year 1632, when the guild of rhetoric De Eglantier, with the motto "In liefde bloeyende", merged with Samuel Coster's Nederduytsche Academie, that carried the sign of a busy beehive and the word "Yver".
