A selection of 41 portraits (and title, and the two allegorical plates) from the first edition of Hendrick Hondius's collection of portraits of Dutch artists. The complete collection, which contained 69 portraits, appeared shortly after 1610, as the portrait of De Geyn is dated 1610. A second edition was published in 1618 by Johannes Janssonius in Amsterdam, with the title Theatrum honoris in quo nostri Apelles ... imagines.
None of the bound copies, however, necessarily contain the same number of portraits, which were also for sale separately.
The series is divided in three parts: part 1 contains 22 copies after Domenicus Lampsonius' series of portraits of artist working before ca. 1500; part 2 26 portraits of artists active in the sixteenth century, and part 3 20 portraits of contemporary artists.
This selection contains after (1) the engraved title (H 80), (2) the plate with the three putti with banderols (228x152mm; H 81), (3) a leaf with the mounted extra portrait of Hendrick Hondius by Franciscus Boultats after the design by Hondius himself with a short biography in French underneath, (4) a leaf with the printed text of the dedicatory poem by Hendrick Hondius "Picturae amatoribus, admiratoribusque", the portraits of:

There is only one portrait from the first part: that of Cornelis Engelbrechtsz by Hondius; from the second part there are 23 out of 26, and in the third part 17 out of 20 portraits. The compiler of this collection, omitting almost completely the copied portraits of the 'medieval masters', has bound in the portraits of the second and third parts (except for three of the second and three of the third part), to get an almost complete collection of the recent and contemporary Dutch artists.
In total there are 10 portraits by the famous engraver, etcher and publisher Hendrick Hondius (1573-1650), 23 by Simon Wynouts Frisius (ca. 1580-1629), 5 by the pupil of Jacques de Geyn II, Andries Stock (ca. 1580-1648) and 4 by Robert de Baudous (ca. 1574-ca. 1660), although many of the portraits, which are assigned to Frisius, Stock and De Baudous by Hollstein, are actually signed by Hondius.

Good copy.- (Some marginal staining, top corner of several lvs. damaged, spine rubbed).
The new Hollstein, Hendrick Hondius, 80-115 (p. 90-105); Hollstein VII, Frisius, p. 32; Von Szwykowski 1856, p. 1; Kramm III, p. 718; Van Someren 1, 211a; Burchard 15.
