Lille, Van Costenoble, 1769. 8vo. Marbled half calf, spine gilt, red morocco title label lettered in gold. With one folding engraved plate of a city plan of Jerusalem with a printed table of the 49 sites indicated and numbered on the plate, all places relating to the life of Jesus. Interesting engraved head- and tailpieces. (8), XVI, 5-203, (1) pp.

Very rare first and only edition of this abridged account on the history of Jerusalem containing an elaborate description of the Holy sites; an "ouvrage curieux, utile & instructif", written by an anonymous "Missionnaire Apostolique" (perhaps Etienne Dambreville?), who had visited Jerusalem himself. The first part, p. 5-57, is devoted to the description of Jerusalem from its origin till the period the city was destroyed by the Emperor Titus. The second part, p. 58-203, contains an account on Jerusalem at the time of the author's voyage, describing the Holy places such as 'le Jardin des Oliviers', 'le Sepulcre de la Sainte Vièrge', 'la Maison de Pilate', 'le Lieu de l'Ecce Homo', etc., completed with pious reflexions from the author's memoires. Before the first part, the author had added an exercice of piousness for the Holy Mass: "Exercice de pieté pour la sainte Messe. Lorsque le prêtre commence la St. Messe".
Fine copy.- (First lvs, including the plate somewhat soiled).
