A curious and very rare satire on the turbulent student life in Groningen
[HOFSTEDE, Petrus].Pseudo-studiosus hodiernus sive theologus Groninganus detectus et refutatus. Dat is: hedendaagsche naam-student of Groninger godsgeleerde ontdekt en wederlegt door R.L.O.R. (= Petrus Hofstede). ![]() (No place, printer nor year; Leeuwarden, Timon van Dessel, ca. 1737?). Sm.8vo. Later marbled wrappers. Woodcut initials. 154, (2) pp. Very rare first edition of this curious satire on the turbulent student's life in Groningen by Dr. Petrus Hofstede (1716-1803). In 1732 Hofstede went to study Theology in Groningen. During this period he started writing the current satire. Since the early eighteenth century there was severe criticisme on the incompetence of ministers and their lack of profitableness to society. According to many observers, this was owing to the defective system of recruitment, education and selection for ministry. Due to the availability of so many scholarships or grants, the clergy attracted to many adventurers. The present satire is a noteworthy example of this criticism. According to Hofstede the Groningen University was overrun by former peasants, blacksmiths, tailors and the like, all lacking each of the qualities a minister should possess. As a consequence of the publication Hostede was expelled from University and he matriculated at the University of Franeker in September 1737 to finish his studies. A second edition, augmented with a part containing letters and poems. was published in 1738 by Timon van Dessel in Leeuwarden. Later Hofstede became minister in Rotterdam where he also was appointed Professor of theology at the athenaeum. He developed into a very orthodox and pro-Orange minister and he came in conflict with the more liberal Prof. Van der Marck in Groningen, and Prof. Van Goens in Utrecht, both being fired in 1776. Good copy.- (Some (water)staining; corner of last page torn off).
