Zweyte neue und verbesserte Auflage. Coburg, Johann Carl Findeisen, 1761. 8vo. Contemporary brown sprinkled paper over boards. Some very interesting woodcut headpieces. (16), 524, (4) pp.

Second, but first integrated edition of this complete and curious collection of tricks, frauds and deceits performed by all kinds of persons and professions together with the advises how best to avoid them. The original edition had been published in Coburg in 1720, followed by an edition with an additional part in 1730. A pirated edition appeared in 1743 in Halle. So this is in fact the first and certainly the best complete and integrated edition.Apparently the work was very popular, but copies can rarely be found. In the 20th century there are published no less than four photomechanical reprints. Two are after this 1761 edition: (1) Hamburg, Lichten, 19xx, and (2) Munich, Rogner & Barnard, 1977 with a commentary by H. Herberlé; two are after the 1743 pirated edition: (3) Berlin 1958 with a commentary by Joh. Müller, and (4) Leipzig 1929.After the preface of 1720 on p. (3-14) and an additional preface of 1753 (!) on p. 15-16, the professions and persons performing the tricks and frauds are listed in alphabethical order from 'Abgesandte' (envoys) to 'Zwirnhändler' (haberdashers), with, as a matter of fact, much space devoted to 'Advocaten' (lawyers), Aertzte (physicians), 'Buchbinders, -druckers, and -händler' (book binders, printers and booksellers), 'Eltern' (parents), 'Hochzeit Interessenten' (those interested in marriage), 'Mönche' (monks) with 12 pages!, 'Quacksalber' (quack doctors), 'Soldaten (soldiers) and, of course, Studenten' (students). Every section is concluded by the 'Mittel' (remedies) to avoid the tricks. The author Georg Paul Hönn, a 'Doctor Philosophiae', was 'Rath und Amtman' in Coburg.
Good copy, with 19th-century ownership's entry ('Brandenburg zu Osnabruck') on the first flyleaf; also on this page an original indication for the binder: 'Register pages am Ende' in blue pencil; newspaper clipping from the Preussische Zeitung, Berlin 1859, pasted to the verso of the front board, with an article on this Lexicon in the section 'Bibliothecarische Curiosa', testifying of the rarity of the book.- (Some faint browning; boards shaved).
See the commentaries to the reprints mentioned above.
