The brutal assassination of Johan & Cornelis de Witt

(4), 50 pp. Rare collection of documents relating to the death of Cornelis and Johan de With, the politicians who were lynched by the mob on 20 August 1672, the year known as the 'year of disaster'. Some copies are bound with the play 'Haagsche broeder-moord, of Dolle blydschap' by Joachim Oudaen (1628-1692), published in 1674. The present collection is undated, but probably was published circa 1676, since it contains a document dating from April 1676. It was meant as a supplement to Oudaen's play and is illustrated with portraits of both Johan and Cornelis de Witt, and a folding plate showing their mutilated bodies. Good copy.- (Spine sl. damaged, bookplate on upper paste-down, slip of paper with a 19-cent. remark pasted on endpaper).
