Sm. folio. Modern blindstamped calf in antique style. With large woodcut title-initial (the full height of the seven-line title), above an almost full-page woodcut of a pilgrim being regaled in the garden: three figures, two of them labelled 'lacteur' and 'entendement' and sitting at a table, within 3-side borders of 6 parts; large 7-line woodcut first initial. Final leaf with small woodcut printer's device (incorporating the coat-of-arms of the city of Leyden), underneath the colophon on recto and a full-page woodcut on verso: the large figures of a noble-man (again labelled 'lacteur') and a hermit (labelled 'entendement') standing at either side of an open door with caption 'c'est le cloitre de souvenance', behind which the attributes of a hermit's life are depicted. (4), CXXVI (= 132) lvs. (LII-LVII present twice). Rare early Dutch edition of the 'Vaderboeck' (Lives of the Fathers), a collection of lives of the ancient saints and hermits that was very popular during the Middle Ages. The work is almost always attributed to Saint Hieronymus (ca. 349-420), who contributed a few lives. The book is well produced, nicely printed in a strong "lettre bâtarde" in two columns, and beautifully adorned with two fine large first initials, and two large and elegant woodcut plates. Nijhoff-Kronenberg lists only 5 copies, 4 in the Netherlands (one lacking the title), and one in the British Museum in London. Soundly restored, complete copy from the library of V. de la Montagne, with his bookplate on upper pastedown.- (Right lower corner and small strip of upper and lower margin of title restored, touching the first lines of text and part of the woodcut; blank margins partially restored; leather sl. rubbed/ scratched).
Nijhoff-Kronenberg 1079; STC Dutch p. 207; not in Adams nor in Machiels; cf. C.G.N. de Vooys, Middelned. Legenden en Exempelen, 1900, pp. 13-18 (on the composition of the Dutch translation).
