Jacobus Heyblocq (Amsterdam 1623-90) studied theology at the university at Leyden from 1641 on. In 1650 he returned to Amsterdam, to become a teacher at the Latin School; in 1670 he was appointed restor of that school. He died in 1690 and was buried on September 28 in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam.
The illustrations all show the block of a pile driver (Dutch: 'Heiblok', referring to the author's name): (1) the frontispiece, (2) the plate on p. 258 illustrating the poem on the occasion of Heyblocq's marriage with Maria de Lange in 1650 showing a bridge with a blocq (Heiblok) on top before the House 'Mannepad' on the 'Manpad' a well-known road in Haarlem where the mother of Maria lived, and (3) a 'Heiblok' on the last page with a quatrain by Job van Meek'ren.
Famous is Heyblocq's rich Album Amicorum with over 200 inscriptions by Vondel, Westerbaen, Anslo etc. and drawings by Jan de Bray, Rembrandt, Govaert Flinck, Aert van der Neer, and many others (now in the Royal Library, The Hague).
