Amsterdam, Hendrik van Munster en Zoon, Johannes van der Hey en Zoon, 1833. 8vo. Contemporary wrappers. With numerous mathematical and architectural plans and designs on 33 folding engraved plates by D. Veelwaard. IV, 224 pp.

First edition of a school book on civil engineering,  published by order of the Dutch Educational Society "Tot Nut van 't Algemeen", intended to promote useful trade education among youth. The book was written by an Inspector of the Water Works at Uithoorn in answer to a prize competition called for by the Society. The Society had offered a prize for a  teaching manual on architecture because architecture comprised a large number of different trades, like stone-cutter, mason, carpenter, etc. It was one of the last school books published  by the Society, and it was also published in the Society's series:  "Prize Winning Essays". Everything the book  taught was clearly and fully illustrated on folding engraved plates, which were printed in such a way that the pupils could  look at them when studying the text.
Fine copy.
Cat. Van Rijn, Suppl., p. 6; not in Bierens de Haan.
