Born in Utrecht, Heurnius was taught at the Utrecht Hieronymus School by a.o. Georgius Macropedius. He studied in Louvain (with Gemma Frisius) and Paris, where he became interested in surgery. In 1567 he traveled to Padua, the most famous center of medical education in Europe since the introduction by Battista da Monte of the teaching of medical students at the bedside. He graduated in Padua in 1571 to become court physician of François Perrenot, the nephew of Count Granvelle. Back home in 1573 he practiced in Utrecht and in 1581 he was appointed professor in medicine at the Leiden University. Evidently influenced by his education in Padua, he was the first to propose bedside teaching for medical students in Northern Europe. Apart from his teachings, Heurnius was also court physician of William the Silent and Prince Maurits. Heurnius's works were known all over Europe and were both translated and republished many times. His Opera omnia were published from 1608-1610, edited by his son Otho Heurnius who also was professor in medicine at the Leiden University. Ad 1: Second edition of this general treatment of the medical profession, complete with the three folding tables. The book is dedicated to the board of the Leiden University. Laudatory poems by his Leiden colleagues Justus Lipsius, Joannes Holman, and Bonaventura Vulcanius (in Greek) precede the voluminous work in three books; poems by F. Nansius, Georgius Benedicti, Fr. Lansberg, Gualterus Ronssaeus and Cornelius Vigius are at the end. The first edition was published in 1587. Ad 2: First edition of this handbook on the illnesses of the head, their treatment and cure, dedicated to the States of Holland and Westfriesland, dated 1593. Laudatory poems, some in Greek, by the famous Josephus Scaliger and Janus Douza and Franco and G. Duyck, Bonaventura Vulcanius, Franciscus Nansius, Ezech. Valens, Raph. Thorius and Guanterus Verdoesius. A second edition was published in 1608. Ad 3: Second edition, edited after the death of the author by his son Othos Heurnius (the first was published in 1602) of this handbook on the illnesses of the eye, ear, nose, teeth and mouth, their treatment and cure. The work was dedicated to the States of Utrecht. An interesting laudatory poem by the famous Leiden professor Daniel Heinsius precedes the work. Ad 4: Second edition (the first published in 1602), edited by Heurnius's son Otho, of this handbook on the illnesses of chest, their treatment and cure. The work was dedicated by Otho Heurnius to Prince Maurice. Laudatory poems by G. Verdoesius, Joannes Posthius and Daniel Heinsius (in Greek) at the end. Ad 5: First edition of this handbook on the illnesses of the stomach, their treatment and cure. The work was dedicated this time to Adriaan à Mathenes and Cornelis van de Myle, trustees of the Leiden University, and Nicolaas Seistius. A poem on the portrait of Heurnius by Daniel Heinsius precedes the work (p. 1-38). On p. 39 half-title: "Johannis Heurnii Responsum ad ... praesidem Joannem Banchemium ... Nullum esse aquae innatationem laminarum indicium" (text: p. 40-43). Then, on p. 45, a half-title: "Johannis Heurnii ... De medicinae origine, Aesculapidum ac Hippocratis stirpe & Scriptis oratio" helt at the Leiden University on 23 August 1589 (text: p. 46-62; 1 f. index). Good copy.- (Some browning at places; part of the margins of last 4 lvs. eaten away (not affecting the text), binding damaged, but skillfully restored).
