First edition of an extensive description of Sagelterland, that is German Frisa, lying between Oldenburg and the Dutch Frisian border, and between Emden and Varel in the North and Meppen and Vedde in the South. The authors are both Frisians and members of the "Provinciaal Friesch Genootschap ter beoefening der Friesche Geschied-, Oudheid- en Taalkunde" (The Frisian Society for the study of Frisian history, antiquity and language). The costume-plates were drawn by C.B. Buys at Leeuwarden, and the map was made by W. van Peyma, both proud Frisians as well. Jhr. Dr. Montanus de Haas Hettema (1796-1873) was a fierce Roman Catholic and Frisian nationalist, who has published many works on Frisian folklore and antiquity. Together with the minister Rinse Posthumus he traveled to Sagelterland in 1832 and made a rather thorough study of the region, the people and their language.

Splendid copy, in richly gilt red morocco binding, with the bookplate of C. Carsten.
