Second augmented and improved edition of this concise manual on learning how to play the harpsichord or organ by well-known Dutch music teacher and organ builder from Gouda, Joachim Hess. In his preface he writes that he is pleased with the praise he got from other teachers about his book and the fact that it was soon sold out, which necessitated this second edition, which he provided with an engraved plate. According to van der Aa this work was first published in Gouda in 1769! A third edition was published in 1771, the fourth in 1779 and the fifth in 1792. However no information is found on the first edition. 
In 1808 Hess published another book with the title De handleiding tot het leeren van 't clavecimbel of orgelspel. verkort en gemakkelijk gemaakt voor eerstbeginnenden. In the introduction of that book he states that the Korte en eenvoudige handleiding ... prooved to be too difficult for beginning pupils and so he provided a version in more easily comprehensible language.
