Nineteenth-century red morocco, both sides with gilt borders and four corner pieces, spine gilt in compartments with title lettered in gold, rich inner dentelles, g.e. (Rivière & son). Title printed in red and black in woodcut border. 261 (=262), (2) lvs. First and only edition of this important contemporary history of the Dutch Revolt. Several historians have been considered to be the author or translator of this work, but since the scholarly article by Vermaseren in 1958, it is generally accepted that Gilbert Roy (or Regius) composed the text of this chronicle. For the first two books (f. 4r-102r, till 1572) Roy translated the work by the jurist Adam Henricpetri from Basle, Niderlendischer ersten Kriegen. Empörungen ... (Basle 1575). Henricpetri mainly describes from an anti-Spanish viewpoint, the beginning and causes of the revolt and the working of the Spanish Inquisition and its impact and effect on it. The book is therefore also important for the history of the Inquisition as such. Book 3 of the Cronyc (f. 102v-262v, till 1580) is written by Gilbert Roy himself inserting, however, many historical sources, f.e. Sterlinck's story of the siege of Haarlem and the story of the siege of Leiden by Fruytiers, as well as adding many original documents such as the text of the 'Unie van Utrecht' in its edition of 1580. Vermaseren argues in favour of Leiden as the place where the book was printed by the printer/publisher Willem Sylvius. Resent research, however, makes it clear that the book was printed in Leeuwarden (se Typ. Bat. and the studies of Valkema Blaeu). The fact that there are many additions and stories concerning events that had taken place in Groningen and Leeuwarden - until far into the year 1580 - further supports this hypothesis. In 1582 an adapted French translation, also by Roy, was published, followed in 1583 by an unauthorized English version. These translations were very popular and influential outside the Netherlands and they were the only source of information on the Dutch Revolt for foreigners until the major work by Le Petit was published in French and Bor was printed in German. Good copy with bookplate of the famous Broxbourne Library ('Bibliotheca Broxbourniana J.P.W.E. 17 March 1949 Ex dono A & R.E') pasted to the inner side of the back cover and a bookplate of A. Ehrman with coat of arms (arm holding a trident emerging from the sea) pasted to the verso of the front cover.
