The Dutch supported the American rebels against the English during the American Independence War (1775-1783) by trading weapons. Mainly Dutch Patriots, who were opposed to the Dutch King William V, supported the American rebels, in order to reach a more democratic governement in the Netherlands, such as in America. The trade with the Americans infuriated the British. The following war was mainly fought at sea. The Dutch defended their searoutes, which were exclusive to Dutch traders, important for overseas trade with America and their colonies aginst the British marine. Soon the Dutch marine was overpowered by the British and many Dutch colonies, searoutes and Dutch tradeships were taken by the Royal Navy. The North-Sea and the Channel were blocked by the British. This resulted in an economic disaster and poverty for the Netherlands. William V was held responsible by the Patriots. In 1783 a cease-fire was signed between the Dutch and English and the war ended with the Treaty of Paris in 1784. Ad 1. Pamphlet against the English in the form of a fake auctioncatalogue for the extensive collection of Lord W. Gordon containing fake lots with manuscripts, books, prints, drawings& paintings, furniture, artefacts etc. The auction was supposedly held at London 20th of March 1781. Each supposed lot contains a description with satyrical comments on the English monarchy and nobility. Ad 2.
