Amsterdam, Nicolaes van Ravesteyn for the author, 1639. 4to. Later blue wrappers. Large woodcut coat of arms of Amsterdam on title-page, large and small woodcut initials and a woodcut endpiece.

First edition of this Dutch adaptation of the French story Chryseide et Arimant by the publisher Jacob Heerman. The original version of the story was written by Honoré d'Urfé (1567-1625), as part of his famous work L'Astree (vol. III, part 7 and 8). In 1638, Heerman published his translation of a part of this story under the title De gedenckweerdige historie van Chryseide en Arimant (...), but this edition is not listed by Te Winkel, nor by Worp. From Heerman's introduction to the present volume, it can be deduced that he considers it to be a sequel to his earlier translantion.
D'Urfé's original had also been the primary source for Jean Mairet's Chryseide et Arimant, first published in 1620. In the present edition, Jacob Heerman used both the work by Mairet (1604-1686) and its original source by d'Urfé.

Good copy.
