Examples of great men and educational proverbs for Dutch youngsters
HEERMAN, Franciscus. Leeuwarden, Gijsbert Sybes, 1642. 4to. Contemporary vellum. With title within richly engraved allegorical borders, by J. van Meurs, and full-page engraved portrait of the author by W. de Geest after Jonas Suyderhoef. (32), 498, (22, 2 blank) pp. Sixth revised and enlarged edition, in the rare quarto format, of one of the most popular Dutch 17th century schoolbooks on classical history, and at the same time intended for the general public too. The book is divided into 43 chapters, and each chapter again into about 30 lessons, devoted to the best and most glorious acts of great men from classical history, not only of emperors and marshals, but also of philosophers and artists, each lesson always including 10 or 12 proverbs or wise sayings to be learned by heart. Thus, the book combined the two elements most valued at the time to educate children, examples of great men and proverbs. Franciscus Heerman (1610-ca.1670), was born in Friesland, studied at Wittenberg in Germany, and afterwards worked as a lawyer in Amsterdam. His book, the only one known from his hand, was first published at Amsterdam in 12mo in 1634, and was numerous times republished, a 30th edition still being published in 1715. Mainly published in small octavo, the present quarto edition, with its fine engraved title and the large engraved portrait is the most rare. Anna Roemer Visscher in one of her poems praised Heerman for his erudition and wisdom. Good copy.- (Binding sl. rubbed; old owner's ms. entries on endpapers, library stamp on half-title; few small imperfections).
Muller 383: "Weinig Nederlandsche boeken zijn zóo populair geweest"; Scheepers II, 755: "De 4o-uitgaaf is zeldzaam"; Sale Cat. J.L. Beijers, Jan. 1959 (Coll.
