Sprengel. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Halle, Rengerschen Buchhandlung, 1797. 8vo. Original marbled boards. 94 pp. With: LUSIGNAN, Saviour. Reise nach der Türkei und einem Theil der Levante, nebst einer Beschreibung von Palastina. Aus den Briefen des Herrn Saviour Lusignan an Sir Wm. Fordyce. Hamburg, Carl Ernst Bohn, 1789. 180 pp. Ad 1: Original edition of a travel account through Pensylvania and Ohio by the Moravian missionary Johann Gottlieb Heckewelder (1743-1823). In 1771 he started his labours among the Indians and was devoted to their instruction for many years. Having acquired a perfect knowledge of the Delaware language, he was repeatedly requested by Washington to accompany missions to the Indians for pacific purposes. In 1797 he went to Ohio in order to oversee the affairs of his Indian congregation to whom the Congress had granted lands of the Muskingum. Heckewelder made this journey as assistant to General Rufus Putnam, United States commisioner to the Northwestern Indians. Heckewelder published several works contributing to the knowledge of the Delaware Indians. He lived among them for many years and participated in the foundation of the city of Schoenbrunn (now New Philadelphai, Ohio), where the Christian community lived peacefully with the Indians, whether converted or not. This work also appeared as a part of a geographical book series entitled ''Auswahl der besten ausländischen geographischen und statistischen Nachrichten zur Aufklärung der Volker und Länderkunde'' (Halle, 1797), edited by Matthias Sprengel. Ad 2: Very rare original edition of an account of a voyage to the Levant and Palestina, by the author of ''Histoire de la revolte d'' Ali Bey contre la Porte (first edition in English in 1783). His name appears as Saviour, or Sauveur or Estienne de Lusignan in the reference works. Lusignan was of French or Cypriot origin, who travelled to Rahira in 1746 and was travelling as a merchant to Egypt since 1753. In 1771 he became employed by Ali Bey. The English edition of this travel account was published in London in 1788 under the title ''A series of letters addressed to Wm. Fordyce containing a voyage and journey from England to Smirna etc''. Fine, uncut copies.- (Foxing throughout).
