Nicely illustrated little work on how chimneys should be constructed to draw well without smoking. The author, a French Benedictine, systematically describes the different causes of smoking chimneys and gives remedies mostly taken from famous architects like Serlio, Vitruvius, Delorme, Alberti. He also adds new methods to prevent chimneys from smoking or how to protect people from the smoke, gives advices on how to extinguish a chimney-fire, discusses the effects of the quality of the air, the nature of the various winds, and the solar heat. The fine illustrations clearly show the different chimneys and chimney-pieces and how to use them appropriately.
