Cologne, Joannes Kinckius, 1609. 4to. Contemporary vellum, title written on spine. With printer's device on title, woodcut initials and head-pieces. (16), 312 (=310), (2) pp.

First edition - the second edition appeared in 1611, also in Cologne, with the title Commentarius rerum a sacris praesulibus in Belgio gestarum - of a detailed, well documented, very accurate and celebrated work on the history of the establishment of the new episcopal hierarchy in the Low Countries, by virtue of the Papal bull 'Super Universi' issued on 12 Mei 1559. The work contains extensive biographies of the bishops of Roermond G. Lindanus and H. Cuyckius.
The book is important because Havens could still make use of the secret episcopal archives in Roermond which were destroyed by fire in 1665. Many facts and circumstances are only known through this work.
Arnoldus Havens (1540-1610) became a Jezuit in Cologne in 1558. In 1586 he entered the order of the Carthusians, also in Cologne. In 1590 he was chosen prior of the Carthusians at Vugt near his birth place 's-Hertogenbosch. Havens has been very active in arranging and describing the ecclesiastical and episcopal archives in Roermond, 's-Hertogenbosch and Ghent; he also wrote several other historical works.

Good copy.
