Third edition of the popular French-Dutch and Dutch-French dictionaries, first published in 1708 and composed by the well known printer, poet and writer of dictionaries François Halma (1653-1722). The present dictionaries were based on the famous French dictionary by (César) Pierre Richelet (1626-1698), a Paris lawyer and literary author, who from his youth had been very interested in pedagogy and problems of grammar. His Dictionnaire français, first published in 1679, was his most important work and it became a standard for dictionary makers. It was republished and improved many times until far into the 18th century. The present Dutch adaptation by François Halma, making use of many other sources as well, has become more or less an independent work, which has served many generations of Dutch students learning the French language. A second edition was printed in Utrecht in 1710. Other editions include a Utrecht edition of 1758 and a second Brussels edition in 1764-65. Good, but not quite uniformly bound set.- (Bindings rubbed).
Not in Riemens; cf. Coll. Warren N. and Suzanne B. Cordell (French ed. of 1694).
