Modern half red leather with gilt lettering on spine, marbled sides. With woodcut of a classroom on title. 40 pp. in 2 columns. Late eighteenth-century edition of Hakvoord's popular epistolary primer, which in the Dutch Republic gradually replaced the older Roman Catholic letter book by Jacobi, or Heyman Jacobsz. The book taught youth to read and write and compose letters. The letters composed by Hakvoord to be used as examples contain a wealth of useful information and advice, including rules for social conduct. Added are models for drawing up contracts, making invoices, etc., while the present edition has also added at the end eight instructive riddles in verse with their full explanations by Jan van der Veen, a Zwolle citizen and poet. On the verso of the title a publisher's preface on his own new spelling, dated Zwolle, 20 October 1696. The charming woodcut of a classroom on title is probably from a much earlier date. Rather worn, it shows a class with the teacher at his desk at the left and his pupils sitting on benches around him. As usual the book is printed in various types, but mainly in a fine civilité type. Barend Hakvoort (Hackvoort, or Hakfort; d. 1735) was a bookseller and cantor of the Church at Zwolle. His treatise on writing letters was first published ca. 1696; a fifth edition appeared in 1699 and it continued to be reprinted to well into the early nineteenth century. Good copy.
