Second edition of a much valued, impartial and objective historical standard work by Florentius vander Haer (or Haraeus; 1547-1634) on the beginning of the revolt in the Low Countries against Spain, known as the 'Eighty Years' War' (1568-1648), resulting in the foundation of the Republic of the Seven United Provinces, the present Netherlands, and eventually to the Dutch Golden Age.
The history starts with the death of Emperor Charles V in 1559, and ends with the arrival of the Duke of Alva in 1567. This impartial contemporary description of Holland's struggle for independence is based on eyewitness accounts and own experiences of the author. Vander Haer was born from a Utrecht noble family and became a clergyman at an early age. He was appointed professor of theology at Louvain and later lived as a canon in Douai. His present work, first published in Douai in 1587 and written in excellent Latin, has always been in high esteem with scholars and is cited very often by the best authors of both sides - the Protestant as well as the Catholic party - writing on the early history of The Netherlands.
