Ghent, Jan van den Steene (colophon: typis Henrick van den Keere), 1559. Folio. 17th-century blind stamped vellum, spine ribbed in compartments with title lettered in ink. Title with woodcut printer's device in elaborately decorated woodcut border containing coats of arms of Ghent (2), King Philip II of Spain, and (?), woodcut head- and end-pieces, woodcut initials. (4), 801, (3) pp.

Rare and very important first edition of this extensive collection of edicts and ordinances for Flanders from the years 1506-56 divided in 3 books with in total 49 chapters. The first book, with 16 chapters contains edicts on justice and jurisdiction (blasphemy, heresy and executions), jurisdiction applicable to clergymen, an edict for prison guards, etc. This section also includes two indices of forbidden books on pp. 145-53 (dated 1546) and pp. 174-86 (dated 1550) respectively; the first list also containing printers and booksellers.
The second book with political edicts contains 30 chapters on a.o. seafaring and fishery, hunting, infrastructure, coins, tollage, the drapery industry, paper, windmills, grain, wine, beer and beer barrels, forest and peat. The third and last book contains three chapters with princely decrees on various matters. A second updated edition was published in 1562, also in Ghent.

Very good copy from the library of the well-known Prof. Meindert Tydeman (1741-1825) with his signature on the recto of the second fly leaf; J.D. Moerman entered his signature in 1914 on the  recto of the first fly-leaf.- (Blank upper margin of title rest.; some marginal browning).
