Leiden, Mevr. Marie de Bock-Hardenberg & Mej. L. Hardenberg, (ca. 1900). 14 parts of the series. Oblong 8vo. Orig. coloured lithographed wrappers. With ca. 10 full-page coloured lithographed plates to each part. (16 to 24) pp. each part.

New method of teaching young children to read and write by means of pictures. This method, developed at the training college in Leiden, was awarded a gold medal at the Paris World Exhibitions in 1889 and 1900, but in practice it never came to stay in the Dutch educational system, although at first the new  method was very successful, and at least 19 different, gradually advancing parts were published and several times republished. Each part has a sequence of plates on one subject, like the fisherman, the stork, our dog, the lamplighter, the farmer, Maria with her doll, the little pig, the bogeyman, etc.
The little child first is instructed to look at the plates and to tell the sequence it sees in them. Then the teacher tells the story the plates depict, and the child has to repeat this story. Then the teacher reads the verses to the plates, and the child has to learn them by heart. These verses also can be sung to music, an example of which is given on the backcover of the first part. Then the child has to invent its own similar story, and draw this in pictures. The last step then is that the child reads the verses, and writes verses to its own story. The main purpose of the method was that the child should first be taught to read and write in pictures, before reading and writing in letters. The 14 parts present here are the following: 1-2, 4, 6-8, 10, 13-19.

Good copies.- (Few spines rep.; some minor defects).
