Leiden, Marie de Bock-Hardenberg, (ca. 1900). Large 8vo Orig. lithographed wrappers. With chromolithographed title, and large illustrations and numerous rebus's on 23 chromolithographed plates. (24) lvs.

The second step to reading according to the new method of teaching young children to read and write by means of pictures, developed at the Training College in Leiden and called "Methode Leidsche Kweekschool". This second step teaches children to read whole sentences and eventually short stories, but the method is mainly pictorial, teaching with the help of a large illustration which then is broken up in small and eventually larger rebus's which the children first have to translate into spoken words before actually reading them in printing.
The text, partly addressed to the teacher, is printed on the pages opposite the plates, on verso of the preceeding plate. The plates in the book should also, much enlarged, be hung at the front of the class-room, or else drawn on the blackboard, so all children could join the lessons together. At the end of the book is stated that although the "Woordschrift" is the second step of the "Beeldschrift", it is the first step only of the "Klankschrift", which will teach the joining and dividing of sounds. Still, the method in practice was too complicated and elaborate for most teachers, so it never went beyond its experimental phase, and it seems doubtful if the third step was ever published.

Good copy.- (Spines sl. dam.; small library-stamps on all plates).
The present title not found recorded; cf. Cat. De Koning 53 & 54, with parts of the "Beeldschrift", and of "Letterklank en teeken", which was the second step to writing; not in NUC.
