Dutch translation of the latest much enlarged original German edition of the famous and influential first large German encyclopaedia ('Konversationslexikon') entitled Reales Staats-, Zeitungs- (later also:) und Conversations-lexikon, which was followed by the 'second vol.': Curieuses und Natur-, Kunst-, Berg-, Gewerk- und Handlungs-Lexicon in 1712 by Johann Hübner (1668-1731). Hübner was born in Türchau near Zittau, Germany, on 15 April 1688. In 1691 he achieved a master's degree and went to the University of Leipzig in 1689 in order to teach history, geography and poetry. In 1694 Johannes Hübner went to Merseburg, where he became the principal of a grammar school for 17 years, before taking over the 'Johanneum' in Hamburg in 1711. His famous Real-Lexikon, was read all over Germany and was translated into several languages. At least 25 editions were published till the end of the 18th century. The editions were much enlarged, especially during Hübner's lifetime. The edition which here was translated into Dutch contained already 26.000 entries. Hübner was known as a committed teacher and rendered outstanding services to geography and religious education. The first edition of the Dutch translation of the first part appeared in 1732 with the title Staats- en koeranten-tolk in Leiden with Dirk Haak & Samuel Luchtmans, followed in 1734 by the second part: the translation of Hübner's Curieuses und Natur-, Kunst-, Berg-, Gewerk- und Handlungs-Lexicon (1712), which was reprinted in 1737 and 1768. Our set consist of the first part in its second, and the second part in its first edition. Good uniformly bound set.- (First lvs. of vol. 1 somewhat browned, covers of vol. 2 stained).
