Contemporary overlapping vellum, ms. title in ink on spine. Title printed in red and black with engraved illustration of a Spanish soldier attacking 'Belgica', the Dutch Virgin, 15 full-page and one half-page magnificent engraved oval portraits, each with a printed poem of 4 lines in Dutch underneath, and one full-page engraved plate of a statue of Alva in the text, and 2 double-page engraved plates outside the text. (8), 411, (1) pp. Very rare first edition of this history of the Dutch revolt against Spain, covering the years 1555-1598. The book is intended to awake the world to the atrocities of the Spaniards perpetrated in the Netherlands. It was published anonymously in 1616 without mentioning the printer, but the second edition, printed in Delft by Jan Andriesz. Cloeting in 1626 appeared under the name of the author: Johannes Gysius, or Ghysius or Gys (ca. 1585-1652), a minister at Streefkerk. In 1619 a Latin translation probably by François Hotman (or by Ernestus Eremundus?) was published in Leiden by Bartholomaeus van der Bild with the title Origo et historia tumultuum belgicorum (second edition: Amsterdam, Joh. Janssonius, 1641). Gysius's work is partly based on the well-known historical works by Bor, Van Meteren, Meursius and Baudartius, but is partly certainly also original, especially for instance the description of the imprisonment of Montigny in Spain on p. 114-135 describing events not te be found in other sources. The history was extensively plundered by later writers, a.o. in the well-known Spieghel der Spaensche Tyranny in Nederlant (Amsterdam 1638), used as a widely read school book till far into the 19th century. The two double-page plates are somewhat reduced copies after Hogenberg, depicting the beheading of Gysbert and Jan van Batenburg at Brussels on 1 June 1568 (Muller 538) and the beheading of the Counts of Egmond and Horne on 5 June of the same year (Muller 542). The magnificent oval portraits with a Latin legend and a printed Dutch poem underneath are by an anonymous artist. De Wind in his work of 1835 then already specified this work as very rare. Good copy from the library of the famous historian G.H.M. Delprat (cat. Nr. 22120), with bookplate of Mr. J. Nanninga Uitterdijk on inside front cover and ownership's entry of S.G. van Looy (1931) on the first fly-leaf; some ms. notes on verso first fly leave.- (Front hinges half loose, some occasional browning and water staining).
De Wind, Bibl. der Nederlandsche geschiedschrijvers (Middelburg 1835), pp. 571-6; Bibl. Belg. G 63; De Buck 2298; NNBW II, cols. 534-6; Muller, Nederl. historieplaten 539 and 542; Van Someren, Portr. 47 (and 49).
