Haarlem, Wed. Hermanus van Hulkenroy, 1716. 4to. Contemp. boards. With etching of a mermaid on title, richly etched frontispiece showing a country festival, large folding mezzotint showing a farmer's indoor party, 3 full-page etchings, 1 large folding, with songs underneath, and 21 etchings in text with scenes from country life, incl. some farmer's busts and figures, all after etchings by Adriaen van Ostade, and with musical scores to all songs. (8), 63, (1) pp.

Very rare Dutch songbook on farmer's festivals, beautifully illustrated with etchings after the famous Dutch painter of life in the country, Adriaen van Ostade (1610-1634), and with musical scores, probably by Herman van Hulkenroy. The collected works of Jan van Gysen, a popular author who wrote a large number of occasional poems, were published at Amsterdam, in three volumes in 1707-1711, cf. Waller 653, but the present selection, with music and with the fine etchings after Van Ostade, was probably published only once, partly with the address of the Widow of Van Hulkenroy and partly with the address of J. van Egmont who had also published the collected works.
The fine etchings, newly made and in reverse, present an exemplary survey of Van Ostade's work, showing busts of peasants, women on their way to the market with baskets on their arms, farmers smoking, merry parties dancing in front of the farm, a knife-grinder, a schoolmaster, etc.

Good copy.- (Binding sl. rubbed).
Scheurleer, Liedboeken, 199 (lists both 1716-issues); Scheepers I, 284 "Hoogst zeldzaam"; Goovaerts 1011; Cat. Muziekhist. Museum Scheurleer II, p. 92; cf. Hollstein XV, pp. 1-70, where most of the etchings are found reproduced; not in Arents, Tobacco.
