A French historian on ancient and modern India
GUYON, Claude-Marie.Histoire des Indes Orientales, anciennes et modernes. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Paris, J. H. Butard, 1744. 3 vols. 8vo. Contemporary mottled calf, spine ribbed and gilt, with light brown title label, gilt binding edges, red painted edges. With 2 large engraved folding maps by Desbruslins of India and Indonesia, and several nice woodcut initials and head- and tailpieces. (22), 396; (2), 353 (1); (2), 471, (9) pp. Interesting work on India and Indonesia, by the French historian and Abbot Claude-Marie Guyon (1699-1771), which unleashed a polemic with Jean-François Charpentier de Cassigny. Guyon was for some time member of the 'Congrégation de l'Oratoire', but later settled down in Paris, where he worked for the abbot Desfontaines. The history, geography, religion, customs, commerce and animals of ancient India are treated in the first volume, the second volume deals with the geography and the different religions of modern India, and the third is on the commerce of the Indian peoples with the Portuguese, Dutch, English, Danish, Venetian and French. This last volume is concluded by an elaborate index. Good copy with the ex-libris of M. Henry Aumonier pasted on title vignette.
