Rare first Dutch edition of probably the most popular educational work by the Spanish author Fra Antonio Guevara, translated by Cornelis van Beresteyn, from the Spanish "Epistolas familiares" from 1539-1542. It contains a large collection of letters, full of moral advice and instructions about correct social behaviour, written not only by the author himself, but also taken from various classical authors, even including imaginary ones. The letters are preceeded by a short preface by the translator, printed on verso of the title. Of this work only three editions are found recorded, all published in the Northern Netherlands. One is published at Delft in 1583 (our copy), another at Utrecht by S. de Roy for R. Wylickx in 1595, and the last is published at Amsterdam by Frans Pels in 1632. There are only 2 recorded copies of our edition found in The Netherlands and none outside!
