Well illustrated popular description of exotic Turkey
GUER, Jean Antoine.Moeurs et usages des Turcs, leur religion, leur governement civil, militaire et politique, avec un abrégé de l'histoire Ottomane. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Paris, Widow Delatour, for Coustelier, 1746-1747. 2 vols. Large 4to. Contemp. marbled calf, spines richly gilt in compartments, with red title-labels, gilt tripple fillet borders on sides, gilt binding edges, marbled endpapers, g.e. With 2 engraved frontispieces, engraved vignette on 2 titles, beautifully engraved head- and tailpieces, most of them illustrating the text, interesting engraved initials. Large folding view of the Serail in Constantinople (280x920mm, mistakingly bound in vol. 1), folding view of the city of Constantinople, 4 double-page engraved views and plates, and 22 full-page engraved plates, all within decorative borders, and all engraved by Cl. Duflos, several after F. Boucher and N. Halle. XXIV, 453, (19); VIII, 537, (2, 3 blank) pp. First edition of a beautifully illustrated and richly produced history and description of the Turcs by Jean Antoine Guer, French literary author, born in Savoy and died at Paris in 1764. As the title indicates the work especially treats the morals and customs of the Turcs, and includes some curious documents. As the author never visited Turkey, the work was based on the travel accounts of Grelot, Busbecq, Belon, Rycaut, Maillet, etc. But well written, finely illustrated, as well as for its exotic and rather sensuous contents the work became immediately popular and was republished in 1747 at Paris by Mérigot & Piget. A pirate edition was published by Mortier in Amsterdam. Because all these editions have the same collation, early copies are often found in mixed editions. The plates, which according to Blackmer are "particularly charming", include fine costume plates, partly based on Le Hay's series of one hundred costume plates of the Levant, published at Paris in 1714-1715. Very fine copy on large paper. - (Bindings somewhat shaved).
Atabey 534; Cohen-De Ricci, col. 465; Cicognara 1671; Brunet II, col.1783; cf. Blackmer 762 (mixed ed., first vol. publ. by Mortier at Amst. & second vol. by Mérigot & Piget at Paris); Colas 1348 (mixed ed., first vol. publ. by Coutelier & second vol. by Mérigot & Piget), and 1349 (Amst., Mortier ed.); Lipperheide 1418 (Amst., Mortier ed.).
