Paris, Iean Gesselin, 1602. Sm.8vo. Modern vellum, spine gilt-lined with red morocco title-label, sides blindstamped with central ornament, red painted edges. 189, (3) pp.

First and only edition of an interesting Italian grammar, dedicated to the French Queen Maria de Medicis. It is one of the earliest manuals specifically intended for book translators, who whished to convert philosophical, theological, legal, literary and scientific texts from the Italian into the French or vice versa. Next to parts of speech, idiomatic expression and syntax, much attention is also given to proper pronunciation. The book is finely printed in various Roman and Italic types, and nicely decorated with woodcut headpieces, vignettes and initials. With motto in capitals on verso title within two typographical borders.

Fine copy of a very rare work.- (First and last lvs. soiled and stained).
Cioranescu 34172; Arbour 3529; Bingen, Le Maitre Italien, p. 127; NUC lists 1 copy.
