Rare first collected edition of the poetical works of the famous Dutch humanist, diplomat and lawyer
GROTIUS, Hugo.Poemata, Collecta & magnam partem nunc primum edita à fratre Guilielmo Grotio. ![]() Lugdunum Batavorum, Andr. Clouquius, 1617. Small 8vo. Contempoarary vellum, spine in compartments with gilt stamped ornament, gilt rolled ornamental borders on sides, with gilt ornaments in the corners and large oval gilt ornament in center, with the intital "W" gilt stamped on top on both sides. With title within richly engraved architectural border. (24), 548 pp. Rare first collected edition of the poetical works of the famous Dutch humanist, diplomat and lawyer Hugo Grotius, or de Groot (1583-1645). On verso title an index is given of the works the volume contains: Silvarum libri III, Eligiarum liber unus, Farraginis libri III, Epigrammatum libri II, Pars Institutionum Iustiniani carmine reddita, Tragoedia Christus patiens, Et alia quaedam, cum amicorum elogijs. The volume was dedicated by Willem de Groot to Cornelis van der Mylen, followed by a letter of Hugo de Groot to his brother Willem, expressing the author's original fears and objections to the publication. But by correspondence the author held a firm grip on his brother, and that not all his poetical works were inserted was mainly due to his refusing to have them added, on the grounds they were not good enough. So even his play Adamus was not admitted. Still the book was very popular and many times republished, a.o. at London in 1639. In spite of the great qualities and the good services Hugo de Groot had rendered his country, he fell victim to the political-religious quarrels in the Netherlands, and from 1620 onwards he had to live abroad, and spent his talents in foreign service, at the courts of France and Sweden. The Dutch States even went so far as to put the present work on the Index of forbidden books, in 1626. Good copy in an interesting binding.- (Old manuscript ownership's entries on first endpapers, title and verso title, partly erased on title; first free endpaper lacking; few stains).
