One of the most popular books of Hugo de Groot, or Grotius (1583-1645): "The Truth of Christian Religion". Originally written in Dutch during his imprisonment at  the Castle Loevesteyn, it was composed entirely in verse, in a very popular manner, as Grotius meant it for use of sailors. After he was freed, and after some delay, the first two editions appeared in 1622. Grotius reworked it in Latin, in prose and in more polished language, in 1627 under the title "De Veritate Religionis Christianae". By this Latin edition the work became enormously and internationally popular, being translated in German (1631), English (1632), French (1636), Arab (1660), Danish (1678), Swedish (1712), Gaelic (1716), Hongarian (1732), Polish (1766), Italian (1806), and Urdu (1839). And from the Latin edition even a Dutch translation was made in about 1650 by Nicolaas Borremans, although Grotius himself had not wanted it as he thought it superfluous to make a Dutch translation of an originally Dutch book. So two quite different Dutch versions kept being published side by side.
The present is the third of the original popular Dutch edition in verse, with some changes in the preliminaries and some religious verses added at the end from other sources. An obituary letter on Grotius by Johannes Quistorpius, translated into Dutch, was added too. The main work itself was left unchanged. It contains six chapters, three positive ones: about God and religion, the dignity and excellence of Christian religion, and the credibility of the Scriptures, followed by three negative chapters: against Paganism, against Judaism, and against Mohammedanism. The explanation in verse of the Epistle of Johannes is added at the end under separate title. The book is nicely printed in a small Gothic type with some legenda in small Roman type in the margins.

Good copy.- (Waterstained in margins almost throughout; covers sl. warped and ties lacking).
