Anonymously published French translation of a curious work by Francis Grose (1731-1791) on the rules for drawing caricatures. The work originally appeared in London in 1788 (republished in 1791 and 1797) and was shortly after translated into German by Johann Gottfried Grohmann (1763-1805). This French edition is translated from that German translation. There also exists a French copy translated from the original English work, published in 1802 by Renouard, but our copy was probably published earlier.
The work contains two parts, the first is dedicated to the principles of caricatures and the second is an "essai sur la peinture comique". The illustrations represent portraits and grotesque characters engraved by Grohmann after the drawings of Francis Grose, Woodward, Berggold and Newton. was an archeologist, draughtsman and author of a great number of books, amongst others dictionaries and glossaries of jargon. This work demonstrates very well the interest for caricatures at the end of the XVIIIth century.

Good copy.- (Binding edges slightly damaged, some insignificant foxing through text).
