Famous and enormously influential Italian work on horsemanship. Federico Grisone was a master horseman from Naples. The fine reputation of the riding Academy of Naples was due to the service of Grisone. He worked primarily with destriers, or war horses, and his training methods involved heavy curb bits and cruel punishments. Grisone was greatly influenced by the Renaissance rediscovery of the works of Xenophon, a Greek writer and cavalry officer who lived about 400 B.C.
The design forbits in the present work set a style for future horse books. The first part deals with the nature of horses, their vices, rules for breeding, vetenirary advice, their use and aid in war, and of the pleasure they bring human beings. The second part deals with the anatomy of horses, their indispositions and cures, surgery and its effects. Many editions were published in all European languages, but at the present especially the editions in the original Italian language are very difficult to find.

Good copy.- (Spine repaired at bottom; endpapers strength. at hinges; ms. notes on title page canceled with ink; sl. foxed; few tears without loss of text).
