Calamatta, and of which four signed by Greeven, with title in French and Dutch, or only French underneath and all richly and beautifully coloured by hand. (2) lvs. (=Title and list of plates). Beautiful coloured plates book on Dutch costumes, mainly from the Northern Provinces, with lithographs after drawings by Hendrik Greeven. It was modelled after an engraved Dutch costume-book by Evert Maaskamp published at Amsterdam at the beginning of the century with plates designed by various artists. However, in the present work all plates have been newly drawn after nature by a single artist, Hendrik Greeven (1787-1854), who in a quite different artistic approach put his subjects against fine background scenery, in the landscape or before the houses typical of the region. Vallon de Villeneuve transferred the drawings to stone. These lithographs, printed by Thierry, were among the first to be produced in France. The colouring is of exceptional fine quality, probably done in Buffa's workshop. All plates are signed by the artist, the lithographer and the printer, and have the Amsterdam publisher's address. The captions to the plates are in French and Dutch, the description to each plate consists of one page in French and one page in English. The foreword is in French and English. Ad 2: Very rare collection of fine 14 handcoloured lithographs on Dutch costumes, landscapes & scenery. Only another edition of this work is found recorded in Lipperheide and Colas listing a same title but without a year (18.?) and mentioning 16 plates. A number of plates were later published in ''Album des costumes Pays Bas'', Amsterdam, Buffa, c. 1848, (Landwehr 219) and 'Souvenirs de Pays Bas', Amsterdam, Buffa, c. 1845. (Landwehr 443) with 16 plates. This last work contains 5 costume plates also published in the ''Album des costumes Pays Bas''. List of plates with concordant numbers of resp.
