To increase the production of oil: first edition of a rare and interesting work on the oil-bearing Chinese radish
GRANDI, Francesco de'.Istruzione sulla coltura del rafano oleifero Cinese e relative manifatture dell' olio. ![]() ![]() ![]() Torino, Dalla Stamperia Fea, 1793. 8vo. Original wrappers charmingly decorated in pink. With engraved folding plate of a machine for the production of oil (19 x 27 cm). 70, (2 + 4) pp. Rare first edition of this treaty on the Chinese oil-bearing radish, by Francesco de Grandi. Probably the same work but with a slightly different title, Istruzione sulla coltivazione del rafano oleifero cinese e relative manifatture del olio was published in 1799, the fifth edition in 1804. Wanting to extend the production of oil for the growing consumption, the Patriotica Societa of Milano decided to reward the person that would come with a method to achieve this. As Francesco de Grandi had heard of the production of oil from raddish in China, described by Linnaeus, he decided to take the challenge and in 1787 sowed 12 seeds of the raddish. His experiment was a great success, and he was rewarded. This work contains information about the properties of the raddish, the best circumstances for sowing, the grain harvest, the preparation of the seed, the extraction and conservation of the oil. Chapter VIII contain two letters written by the author to the Patriotica Societa, the first dated 7 December 1792, the second 3 December 1792. Our copy has the contemporary letterpress bookplate of the "Libraio Genova accanto a S. Tommaso" pasted on inside of front cover and their nice stocklist (4 pp. of a sl. smaller size than the bookblock, dated February 1793) at the end. The first book listed in that catalogue is the present publication, with the price of the booklet: 1 lira. Good copy.- (Covers slightly damaged and soiled and a few soiled leaves).
Dizionario ragionato dei libri di Agricoltura, p. 334 ('Vi spiega con precisione quanto concerne la manifattura dell'olio; e descrive il frantoio cui crede migliore ad estrarlo'); Paleari I, p. 242 ('Molto raro').
