First edition of an extensive history of the Roman Catholic church in Malabar, India, by Antonio de Gouvea (ca.1575-1628), bishop of Cirene, together with an account of the Synod of Diamper, held in 1599 by the Archbishop of Goa, Alexeiro de Meneses (1559-1617). It also contains a description of the liturgy used in Malabar. The original manuscript of this work, written by Gouvea in Portuguese in 1606, was entitled "Jornada  do Arcebispo de Goa, D. fra Aleixo de Menezes, primaz da India  oriental, religioso da ordem de Santo-Agostinho, quando foy asservas de Malavar e Lugares em que morao os antigos christaos de s. Thome". Johannes Facundis Raulin (1694-1754) translated  the manuscript into Latin.
Alexeiro De Meneses, born in Portugal, was a member of the order of the Augustins in Lisbon, and was appointed Archbishop at Goa in 1595. He especially occupied himself with a Christian heretic sect called the Nestorians, also known as the Christians of St. Thomas, founded in Constantinopel in the 5th century. The followers of this sect had been prosecuted for ages and fled to Persia, China, Japan, and also to India. The archbishop of Goa opened a Synod in Diamper in 1599, during which he encouraged the Catholic Church to accept Nestorians. The author, Antonio de Gouvea, entered the monastry of St. Augustin in Lisbon in 1591.
