Nicely illustrated travel account of "sights" and sacred places in the Holy Land
GOUJON, Jacques.Histoire et voyage de la Terre-sainte, où tout ce qu'il y a de plus remarquable dans les saints lieux, est tres exactement descrit. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Lyon, Pierre Compagnon & Robert Taillandier, 1671. 4to. Contemporary calf, spine ribbed and gilt. Woodcut vignette on title and 17 folding engraved plates depicting maps, views and plans of regions, mountains and buildings in the holy land, at least one designed by Goujon himself anf one is signed by Derbage ad the executor. (12), 358, (10, last blank) pp. Rare and nicely illustrated work with extensive information and documentation on sacred places in the Holy Land, by Jacques Goujon. Goujon (1621-1693), a Franciscan born in Dijon, was initially a fur trader, but took part in a crusade to the holy land in 1636. In 1666 he returned there and stayed for a while in Jerusalem. On his way back he was shipwrecked and finally came ashore in Marseille where he finished the present work. The work contains 17 nice and detailed folding engravings of which the first one is a map of the holy land, what now would be in rough outlines Israel, and is (de)signed by Jacques Goujon himself. Furthermore, there are an engraving of Mount Thabor with a legenda pointing out the several spaces on and around it, which have special meanings. The same is done with a plan of the old and new Jerusalem and Mount Sinaï. 4 other plates depict four parts of the Road of Calvary made by Christ, starting with the palace of Pilatus, followed by an illustration of the arch of Pilatus where the jews chanted "Ecce Homo", an illustration of part of the route of the calvary which depicts, among others, the house of Lazarus and a fourth plan giving an overview of the city walls with the arch under which Christ marched to Golgotha, the place of Clavary near Jerusalem, the temple of Salomon, the Mount of Olives and other significant religious places around Jerusalem. The remainder of 9 plates all give plans of buildings, like churches, in for example Jerusalem and Bethlehem. Weber states that the journey to the Holy Land made by Goujon was an imaginary one, to give a more fit in account of the Holy Land and the sacred places and buildings he describes. But real proof for this assumption is never found. Most probably our copy is a second issue of the original edition of 1670. Good copy.
Chadenat 4754 (1670 issue); Röhricht 1142; Weber II 718.
