Schouman, and folding engraved plate of the Painting Academy at The Hague by S. Fokke after A. Schouman. (16), 480; (16), 575, (1) pp. First edition of the interesting 18th century views on Dutch art and painting by the Dutch artist Johan van Gool (1685-1763). Van Gool, mainly a landscape and cattle-painter, continued the work of Karel van Mander and Arnold Houbraken, who had described and taught the art of the 16th and 17th century respectively. Van Gool gives short biographies and descriptions of the works by Dutch painters between 1630-1725, whose lives and works he wanted to immortalize. He wrote the book with the intention to educate young artists and inspire them to emulate the famous Dutch artists from the 17th century. The 'Schouburg' also includes the history of the academy at The Hague. Van Gool based his work on to strict suppositions: firstly that good artists will have social succes as well and earn good money, and secondly that a good artist is always a good and nobel human being too. This raised protest by his colleagues and by contemporary art critics, but Van Gool nevertheless strongly influenced Dutch art (history) of the 18th century. Fine, uncut, set.- (Corners of bindings sl. bumped; few annotations in pencil).
