Maestricht, Jean-Edme Dufour, Philippe Roux, 1776. 2 parts in 1 vol. Contemp. half calf, spine gilt-lined with red title-label. With engraved illustration by D. Chodowiecki on title  to the second part. VIII, 201, (3 blank); 230 pp.

Extremely rare first edition, unfortunately lacking the title to the first part, of one of the earliest French translations of Goethe's famous "Die Leiden des jungen Werthers", first published at Leipzig in 1774. Another now unfindable French translation under the same title seems to have been published at Paris in 1774, and next to ours still another French translation, by Baron S. de Seckendorf, under the title "Les souffrances du jeune Werther" was published at Erlangen in the same year.
Our Maastricht edition was according to Goedeke translated by Ge. Duyverdun from Lausanne. Goedeke wonders if the present translation was not in reality published at Bern, but according to the "Thesaurus" by Gruys & De Wolf, the publishers Dufour & Roux were active at Maastricht between 1773 and 1787. In 1776 also a first Dutch edition was published at Utrecht, a first English edition appeared in 1779, and then all other European languages followed, including Polish, Hungarian and Russian. At the end of the present edition, the second part like the first part ending on page 201, the translator added some observations on the reception of Goethe's "Werther", and a list of the Werther-literature, in German and French, already published in 1774 and 1775.

Good copy.- (Binding only very sl. rubbed; first title lacking).
Goedeke IV, p. 651.
