(16), 42, 58 pp. The three most popular Dutch manuals on painting, drawing and colouring of the second half of the 17th century, the Golden Age of Dutch painting. All the famous Dutch artists of this period probably have read and studied them. The first treatise on painting here in the rare first edition of 1670 with the two other treatises by Goeree in re-editions published in the same year. All three stayed very influential during the 18th century and they were all also translated in German.Goeree (1635-1711) was born in Middelburg. His father who was a physician there died young and Willem couldn't go to University. Instead he became a printer and bookseller, first in Middelburg (1666-77), later in Amsterdam. He was also the author of several scholarly works on Jewish antiquities (Joodsche oudheden of voorbereidselen tot de Bijbelsche Wijsheid (1690 and 1700)), history (Kerkelijke en wereldlijke historien (1705 and 1730)), and architecture (Algemeene bouwkunde (1681 and 1705). He also translated the well-known history of the 'Republic of the Jews (De republijk der Hebreeën) by Petrus Cunaeus. Ad 1: Rare first edition of this most important treatise and primary course on painting. Further editions appeared in 1697, 1704 and 1770. German translation by Joh. Langen (Hamburg 1678; Ornamentst. Samml. 4620). Ad 2: Second much enlarged edition. The first was published in Middelburg in 1668; later editions: 1697, 1705 and 1739. German translation by Filip von Zesen (Hamburg 1669 and 1677; Ornamentst. Samml. 4617). Ad 3: Much enlarged, reworked and augmented re-edition of Geerard ter Brugge's Verlichtery kunst-boeck published in 1616 in Amsterdam; later editions: 1697 and 1705.translation by Joh. Langen (Hamburg 1669 and 1678; Ornamentst. Samml. 4617 and 4747). Good copy.- (Some soiling at places).
