Utrecht, Jan Willemsz. van Rhenen, 1603. Small 8vo. Contemporary vellum with traces of former ties. Woodcut vignette on title, woodcut initials and endpiece. (58) lvs.

Very rare original edition of this accurate, truthful and still important report on the state and position of the reformed church in Utrecht in the second half of the 16th century, by the Utrecht vicar Johannes Gerobulus (or Oudraed; 1540-1606). After having been vicar in resp. Delft (1566), Vlissingen (1573-1586), Harlingen (1586), Deventer (1586), Harderwijk (1588), Gerobulus was called to Utrecht in 1590 where he stayed until his death. During the years 1566-1573 he was conrector of the Latin School at Emden. Together with his defence of the Heidelberg catechism and a collection of sermons, the Waerachtich verhael is his most important work, which is also an invaluable source for the history of the religious foundations, monasteries and churches at Utrecht before the reformation. The rarity of the book is confirmed by old annotations on the fly-leaves, i.a. recording the prices the book has fetched at different auctions: at the auction [in 1744] of the library of Is. le Long (nr. 2614: fl. 2-14); at an auction in Leyden in 1798 (fl. 7-4) and in Utrecht in 1868 (fl. 7.-). One of these old annotations: "Dit stukje is zeer zeldzaam; wordende hier in ook veele oudtheden en stichtingen gemeldt, die bij anderen niet staan." This annotation is astonishingly similar to the one written by Petrus van Musschenbroek in the copy now present in the University Library in Utrecht: "Dit boekje is zeer raar, zijnde er nog maar twee exemplaren behalve dit bekend. Daarenboven zoo bevat hetzelve omstandigheden die elders niet gevonden worden of beschreven zijn." In 1812 Van Musschenbroek published and edited a re-edition (Utrecht, Joh. Altheer). Even that edition is very rare nowadays.
Good copy with an ex-libris of J.F.L. Coenen van 's Gravesloot pasted on inside of front cover; two manuscript ownership's entries on the title of Johan van Causteren and J. Alberti; on the front cover is written 'No. 143' and '280' on the spine.
