The report is devoted to Malta, Syria and Lebanon in the first part, and to Jerusalem and Egypt in the second part. The book deals with the customs and legends of the visited places, with a special emphasis on the sanctuaries of Jerusalem. During the journey, one of the companions of Gentil died, and about this event, Gentil has written a separate book in 1854. The first issue was published by Jules Verronnais in Metz & J. Lecoffre in Paris. A piece of paper with the names of the new publishers is pasted over the original impressum with the date 1855.
