First and only edition of a satirical and philosophical work on the virtues and above all vices of the various peoples of the world by the literary critic Sébastien-Marie-Mathurin Gazon D'Ourxigné (ca. 1710-1784). As a satirical work that containing hidden criticism on the French society, and written during the Ancien Régime, it was necessary to published it with a fictitious imprint (Amsterdam). Among the peoples described are the Egyptians, Jews, Greeks, Romans, Mohammedans, the peoples of East India, America, China, Italy, Spain, Germany, Russia, England and France.
The second part contains four poems based on, and translated from the Heroides of Ovidius: the 'epitres' of Dido to Aeneas, Phillis to Démophon, Penelope to Ulisses, ana Ariane to Theseus (pp. 1-35); furthermore an imitation of the first letter of Heloise to Abélard; Daphne, a poem from the first book of Ovid's Metamorphoses; the romance Angélique & Médor, and some minor poems. The work closes with five original poems: 'La vengeance de l'Amour', 'La liberté ou la parfaite indifférence', 'Madrigal', 'Vers à M. Baron, médecin', and the well-known 'Epitre à M. de Voltaire'.
