Paris, Jules Renouard et. Cie, 1841. 2 parts in one vol. 8vo. Contemporary half brown morroco, gilt spine, blue sprinkled edges. (4), XXIX, 306, (2), VII, 356 pp.

Second edition of an art historical work on the German, Flemish and Dutch painting schools by painter and art critic  Henri Gault de Saint-Germain (1758-1842). The present work, which contains information on the 19th-century art trade, is mostly cited as one of the sources for Balzac's  "Chef d'Œuvre inconnu" (1831).
The first edition was published in Paris, by Antoine-Augustin Renouard in 1818.  Gault de Saint Germain was a college professor at Guéret and Clermont-Ferrand. He was a prolific writer of books on painting and drawing. In 1835, his ''Guide des amateurs de peinture, Ecole Italienne'' was published in Paris. He played an important role in the conservation of works of art in Auvergne.
