First edition of this 'Arcadian' description of the island Walcheren in the province of Zeeland by the minister and poet Mattheus Gargon (1661-1728), who with the help of the burgomaster Hermannus van der Putte of Middelburg was appointed minister at Serooskerke in 1702 and in Flushing in 1707.
Included in the book are descriptions of the history, geography and ancient (Roman monuments found on the island, especially the famous Roman votive altars with images of the local godess Nehellennia and Hercules Magusanus which were found in 1647. Furthermore there are three interesting maps included: (1) an old map found in the monastery at Egmond of ca. 600 with the legends of Petrus Rezen, (2) a map of 1540 by Jacques Horenbout, revised by H. Schroots in 1663, both folding, and (3) a full-page map of the Netherlands after Ortelius.
In the same year (1715) a second edition was printed, followed in 1717 by a second volume; re-editions of both vols. were published in 1746 and 1755.

Fine copy with the ex-libris of H.H. Jonkers.
